Moving to the Netherlands: Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about visas, immigration procedures, and settling in the Netherlands — from IND application to your first BSN.

Visa Types for the Netherlands

Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM)

For skilled professionals with a job offer from a recognized sponsor. Salary threshold applies; processing typically 2–4 weeks.

DAFT / Self-Employment

Dutch-American Friendship Treaty visa for US citizens starting a business, plus similar options for other nationalities under Dutch law.

Startup Visa

One-year residence for innovative entrepreneurs with a Dutch facilitator. Allows you to build your business before applying for a regular permit.

Family Reunification

For partners and dependents joining a resident in the Netherlands. Income requirements and relationship proof required.

IND Application Process

  1. 1

    Sponsor submits application

Your Dutch employer (recognized IND sponsor) files the residence permit application on your behalf via the IND portal.

  2. 2

    Document submission

Upload required documents: valid passport, proof of employment, diploma assessment (if applicable), and sponsor declaration.

  3. 3

    Biometrics appointment

After initial approval, attend an IND desk appointment to submit biometrics and collect your residence permit.

  4. 4

    MVV entry visa (if required)

Non-EU nationals from MVV-required countries must apply for an entry visa at the Dutch embassy before traveling.

  5. 5

    Collect residence permit

Your IND card (verblijfsvergunning) is issued for 1–5 years depending on visa type and is renewable.

Registration & Administrative Steps

After arriving in the Netherlands, several administrative tasks must be completed in a specific order. Attempting them out of sequence is one of the most common pitfalls for new arrivals.

The key dependency chain: find a rental address → register at gemeente → receive BSN → apply for DigiD → open a bank account → arrange health insurance.

BSN Number

DigiD

Bank Account

Most banks require BSN. Bunq and Revolut offer accounts without BSN.
