Why We Built Relocate Quest
A personal story about moving from Japan to the Netherlands — and the tool we wish we had.
The Journey to the Netherlands
In 2022, I made the leap from Japan to the Netherlands on a highly skilled migrant visa. Like most people planning an international move, I spent weeks researching: IND visa requirements, BSN registration, DigiD, bank account setup, health insurance. There was no shortage of information — blog posts, expat forums, official government pages. I thought I was prepared.
What I wasn't prepared for was arriving and realizing that many of these tasks had dependencies I hadn't anticipated. You can't open a Dutch bank account without a BSN. You can't get a BSN without registering at the gemeente. You can't register at the gemeente until you have a fixed address. Each task was blocking the next, and none of the guides I'd read had made this ordering explicit. I ended up wasting weeks going back and forth between offices.
The Problem: Information Without Structure
The relocation information landscape is fragmented. Plenty of individual guides exist for each step — how to apply for a Dutch bank account, how to get health insurance, how to submit an IND application. But almost none of them show you the full picture: which tasks must come first, which can run in parallel, and what happens if you skip a step.
For someone relocating from Japan, this invisibility of task dependencies is especially painful. The entire Dutch bureaucratic system assumes a baseline familiarity that most newcomers simply don't have. You're left piecing together a puzzle without knowing what the finished picture looks like.
Building Relocate Quest
I built Relocate Quest to solve exactly this problem. Instead of a flat checklist, it visualizes the relocation process as a directed graph — a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) — where each task is a node and each dependency is an edge. You can see at a glance which tasks are unlocked, which are blocked, and what you need to do next. Visa application, document preparation, appointment booking, city registration, bank account setup, healthcare enrollment: all in one place, with the correct sequencing made visible.
The goal was never just to add another information source to the pile. It was to build a structured, task-aware guide that mirrors how relocation actually works — as a sequence of interdependent steps that must be taken in the right order. Whether you're applying for a highly skilled migrant visa, an DAFT visa, or a family reunification permit, Relocate Quest maps the full journey from pre-arrival preparation through post-arrival settlement.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Immigration rules change. New forms are introduced, processing times shift, fee structures are updated. One of the most common frustrations among expats is finding outdated guidance that leads them to prepare the wrong documents or miss a deadline.
We are committed to keeping Relocate Quest up to date. Every flow is linked directly to official government sources — IND, gemeente websites, DigiD, the Dutch tax authority — so you always have a path to the primary source for final verification. When rules change, we update the flows. Our aim is to be the guide we wish had existed when we first arrived: accurate, structured, and built by someone who has been through it.
