For international students coming to study in the Netherlands.
Check your passport's expiry date before anything else: if your nationality needs an MVV, the Dutch embassy or consulate will only place the MVV sticker in a passport that is still valid for at least 6 months at that moment. Renewal is handled by your own country's authority and can take weeks to months, so start here rather than after the permit is approved. The same passport number then runs through every later step -- the IND application, the MVV appointment, biometrics, and collecting the residence permit card in person -- so if you do renew part-way through, tell the IND, and keep the old passport as well. No fee or processing time is shown for this task because both are set by your own government, not by the Netherlands.

Once the decision is positive, book an appointment at the same Dutch embassy or consulate you named on the application form -- another location will turn you away -- and go in person to have the MVV sticker placed in your passport. Three deadlines matter here and missing any of them wastes the approved application: you must make the appointment within 3 months of the IND's decision, your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months when the sticker is placed, and the MVV itself is valid for only 90 days, which is the window in which you must actually enter the Netherlands. There is no separate charge on this flow; the MVV is covered by the application fee you already paid. Before you fly, notify the IND of your date of entry -- that notification is what starts the clock on your residence permit card being ready.
Coming from outside the EU, your household effects can be imported free of import duty -- but you cannot file for that relief yourself. The declaration must go through your removal company, which enters a relief code on your behalf, so choose the mover before you ship anything and send them your documents. Four conditions all have to hold: you are moving your normal residence into the EU, you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, you have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and you import them within 12 months of taking up residence; you also may not lend, pledge, lease or transfer them for 12 months after import. Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and non-portable professional equipment are excluded outright. A vehicle needs its own separate declaration (and can be eligible for bpm exemption), and pets and prescription medicines follow separate rules again. No price is shown because the cost depends on volume, distance and whether an employer pays.
Cover is an admission requirement, not a precaution: the IND requires you to hold insurance that covers the cost of healthcare in the Netherlands, and a policy that stops at your departure date or excludes the Netherlands can sink the application. Buy cover that runs from the day you leave home until Dutch cover takes over, and check three things most travel policies get wrong for a long stay: that it is valid for the full permit period rather than a typical 30 or 90 day trip, that it covers repatriation and liability and not only emergency treatment, and that it names the Netherlands explicitly. Keep the certificate as a PDF -- you will be asked for it with the application and again by a landlord or employer. No price is shown because premiums depend on your age, your stay length and the provider.
The chicken-and-egg problem on arrival is that a traditional Dutch bank wants a BSN, which you only get after registering at the municipality, which itself can take days or weeks to get an appointment for. An EEA-licensed digital bank that issues a Dutch or European IBAN without a BSN closes that gap: open it before you fly so you can move your own money, pay a deposit and take the first direct debits without international card fees. Treat it as a bridge, not a replacement. Some landlords, employers and insurers still insist on an account with a Dutch high-street bank, and a few Dutch direct-debit and iDEAL flows behave better with one, so plan to open the full account once your BSN arrives and keep the bridge account until salary and rent are actually flowing. No price is shown because fees differ per provider.
Fly with the documents in your hand luggage, not in a checked bag: passport, and the IND decision letter or MVV if your nationality needed one. If you travelled on an MVV, it is valid for 90 days and you must enter within that window. Notify the IND of your date of entry before you travel -- your residence permit card is normally ready for collection about a week after that notification, so telling them late simply delays the card. Two clocks start the moment you land, and they overlap: you must register at the municipality within 5 days of arrival, and you need a biometrics appointment and then a collection appointment at the IND, both of which are by appointment only and can be booked out. Book them from your first days, not your first free weekend. No airfare is shown here because it depends entirely on your origin and the season.

Search on the Dutch rental portals and through agents, but filter on one thing above price: whether you may register at the address in the Personal Records Database (BRP). A room let by a landlord who does not permit registration cannot give you a BSN, and without a BSN you cannot get DigiD, a bank account, health insurance or a salary -- so "inschrijving mogelijk" / registration allowed is a hard requirement, not a preference. Have your document pack ready before you view, because good listings are taken within days: passport, proof of income or a guarantor, an employer or university letter, and recent bank statements. Expect to be asked for a deposit of one to two months' rent, and note that agency fees charged to a tenant for finding a property are not permitted. No cost or lead time is shown because rent is a market price and the deposit and fees scale with it.
Signing is the step that unlocks everything after arrival, because the municipality registers you to an address and the BSN follows from that registration -- so what you actually need is not just a roof but an address you are permitted to register at. Before you sign, check that the contract names you as tenant, states the rent and the service charges separately, and that registration in the Personal Records Database is allowed; if the landlord refuses registration, walk away however good the room is. Read the notice period and the minimum term, and photograph the meter readings and the condition of every room on the day you get the keys -- that is your evidence when the deposit is settled. Keep a PDF of the signed contract: the municipality, your employer, your insurer and the utility companies will each ask for it. No cost or lead time is shown because rent, deposit and fees are market prices.
